The 72nd IB (CAFGU) is now confronting many challenges in the performance of its mission in view of its wide area of coverage. The perennial problems in CAFGU Active Auxiliary (CAA) administration, among others, delay of subsistence allowance and untrained cadres reduced the effectiveness of CAFGUs as force multipliers in ISO. This is further aggravated by the CT harassments of CAA detachments and the lost of sizeable number of assorted firearms.
With the designation of LTC JOSHUA R SANTIAGO INF (GSC) PA, as the Battalion Commander, he immediately instituted measures to improve the CAA administration by enhancing the data base of CAAs. It aims to improve accounting and prevent the existence of “ghost CAAs”. The patrol bases are also continuously strengthened and fortified to withstand and repel enemy attack.
Lessons learned that most of the scenarios the led to the disarming of patrol bases were attributed to the deception made by the CTs of wearing military uniforms and introducing as soldiers. The communist terrorists (CTs) even use cadres or CAAs as hostage to force other CAAs in the patrol base to surrender their firearms as what had happened in CAA detachments in Brgy Bintuin, Tulunan, North Cotabato and Brgy Canidkid, Montevista, COMVAL Province.
To prevent the occurrence of similar incidents, 72IB instituted anti-overrun tactical procedures for EP manning a CAA detachment through Camp Defense Rehearsal (CDR) emphasizing action drills depending in an obtaining scenario:
Drill 1 - Under enemy attack (harassment and raids)
Drill 2 - Hostage taking/abduction
Drill 3 - Enemy deception tactics
Drill 4 - Unannounced visitations of detachments
On area defense, a concept of conducting SOT activities in the “HOLD” environment is being formulated. This will be integrated in the patrol system of the detachments targeting isolated sitios that are prone to teach-in activities by the enemy. Maintenance of SOTized barangay will likewise be given utmost consideration.
The improvement of counter-intelligence efforts of the unit is persistently being undertaken by the unit. Detachment Commanders are required to display a billboard showing the cell phone number of 72IB Text Complaint Center in their mess hall/offices to enable the CAAs to report any anomalies related to subsistence allowance and other anomalies related to CAA handling. The text message is receive by the intelligence officer of 72IB for investigation and appropriate action.
One of the flagship projects of the unit is the maintenance of its Army Literacy Patrol System Program for less fortunate families and out-of-school youth. It is intended to win the support of the populace where a CAA detachment is situated. Accordingly, the populace will serve as their warning system in case of CT attack.
The continuous innovations being introduced by 72IB in the CAA administration will eventually justify the relevance of a Cadre Battalion in the ISO against CTM in the Division AOR.
